► Words From Career Service!

Being a Course Representative can provide you with many useful experiences. Whether you are demonstrating that you can clearly communicate student views and concerns to a Programme Committee or generating & collating ideas from your student group, you will be developing skills which you can drawn upon in CVs, job applications and interviews. For example:

    • Communicating
    • Inter-personal
    • Negotiating
    • Liaising
    • Organising
    • Planning
    • Time Management
    • Motivating
    • Listening

To help you identify how you are using these particular skills in your role as a Course Rep, the Careers Service organises an annual training session for all Course Reps. The training session usually takes place during the Autumn term and in the last few years we have invited a local employer to give a presentation at the session. Speakers have included a local Solicitor, a Human Resources Manager from Plymouth City Council and a Volunteer Officer from a local charity. All of the speakers have spoken highly of volunteering and have provided a number of hints and tips to help Course Reps write about their various experiences on job applications.

The Careers Service is keen to receive student views to ensure that we provide a quality and relevant service to students and graduates. A small number of Course Reps volunteer to form a Careers Service Advisory Group to consult on ideas and plans during the academic year. Recently, this group has provided useful comments on the content of the Career Management Policy and The Top Tips Booklet and has advised on publicity materials including our Careers website.

Our website (www.plymouth.ac.uk/careers) includes a lot of information e.g. career planning, job search, CVs, applications, interviews, dates of employer presentations and Careers Fairs. Don’t forget to check out the careers information that is specific to your course at www.plymouth.ac.uk/careers/mycourse !

The Careers Library is open Monday - Friday 9:00 to 17:00.   Our friendly information assistants can guide you through our range of useful books, and free publications. Careers Advisers are available by appointment to help you consider your career ideas and plans, as well as help with CVs, application forms and interview techniques.
