► Climate Change

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is happening and its widely accepted to be the biggest threat facing humanity.

The massive quantity of CO2 that has been pumped into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, which has accelerated hugely in the last few decades, is heating our planet at an alarming rate. The rate of warming is much greater than seen during periods of natural climate change, and the scientific consensus on the human influence on climate change is overwhelming now.

The effects? Devastating. Droughts, famine, the increasing frequency of hurricanes and floods, massive disruption to global food production and infrastructure… and then there is the potential for major feedback mechanisms, with unknown consequences.

For example, as the climate changes the Amazon is becoming drier and prone to forest fire. If forest fires were to sweep across large tracts of the Amazon this would release further quantities of CO2 on a huge scale and remove a major carbon sink, accelerating the warming effect by unknown amounts.

What can be done?

We need urgent action now, and a broad united movement to push governments to make major changes to the way energy is produced, businesses run and transport is organised.

Renewable energy, decent and properly insulated housing, affordable and reliable public transport and limits on the big consumers of energy and the fossil fuel industries are vital.

Events

We will be running a series of events and to raise awareness and get people involved in action on local and national levels, to push for greater action over climate change.

Saturday 8th December – Day of International Climate Protest – national demo in London.
