The War on Terror
The NUS and the student movement has a proud tradition of fighting oppression and injustice in the world and standing up for peace.
At the beginning of this academic year the NUS voted to affiliate to the Stop the War coalition, in recognition of the centrality of the student movement to speaking out against the injustices of the war on terror, both at home with the attacks on civil liberties and fuelling of Islamophobia, and abroad with the massive civilian death tolls and human rights abuses inflicted by the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Events:
Friday 28th September: Forum on ‘The War on Terror’ in the SU at 2:30pm with guest speakers.
Monday 8th October: National Stop the War demo and lobby of parliament – calling for British troops to come home.
Saturday 1st December: International Peace Conference, the ‘World Against War’, taking place in Westminster Central Hall.
Peace and anti war groups are expected from South America, the Middle East, the USA, South Asia, Canada and Europe. The conference will discuss the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and opposition to any attack on Iran. It will also look at the broader struggle against war and for independence against all the threats of the US administration.
Representatives have been invited from Iraq, Palestine, Venezuela and Pakistan amongst others. We have also invited Polish and Czech organisations who are opposing the Bush 'Missile Defence' plan.
