I am also responsible for the bulk of the Students’ Union campaigns and students’ unions have a proud tradition of standing up for student rights and wider issues of human rights and social justice both locally, nationally and on a global level. One of my campaign priorities this year surrounds the growing problems of student debt, deprivation, exploitation in the workplace and the threat of increasing fees.

This year the government is looking at lifting the cap on top-up fees which would enable universities to charge even more. Most would charge in excess of £5,000 a year and those higher up the league tables nearer to £10,000 a year and a further increase will end any illusions to ‘equal access’. We will be looking to get as many students as possible involved in the campaigns to get our voices heard.

Another big campaign will be to promote equality and challenge racism and other forms discrimination both on campus and in the community. We will be holding another ‘Love Music, Hate Racism’ gig in the first term, along with many other events and community activities. Other campaigns will include issues such as rights for student parents, the student campaign against climate change, campaigns on peace and social justice issues and sexual health awareness.
