Why Vote for me? Revitalise VP Sports with James Manthorp
Experience
I have been on the committee for the University Athletics Club for the previous two years, and I am the current chairman. In this time the athletics team has massively expanded by focusing on breaking down barriers to sport, creating a welcoming community and a well organised administrative structure.
Drive
Since joining the Athletics club I have endeavoured to push my own boundaries and to assist all of those around me. Aside from focusing on my sporting career I have raised £4798.95 for various charities by running half marathons, cycling across Europe and asking for donations.
Passion
I am passionate about giving others the opportunity to become involved in exercise, sport and competitions. To achieve this I have focused on developing a safe environment for students to focus on athletics, provided entry level competitions for individuals to try out road races, track and field events and on a larger scale organised a varsity competition against Exeter along with other sports clubs.
What Will I do if elected?
Focus Groups
I will immediately implement regular focus groups from varying groups of students across the university. This will provide a detailed description on student opinion on current developments.
Work closely with club committees to strengthen sport in Plymouth
I believe that the VP Sports officer should be a reference and guidance position for all students and sports clubs. I would focus on building working relationships with all of the club committees and endeavour to make myself available when students need me.
Take forward the Universities Sport Development Plan
The University Sport development plan outlines new ideology that sport within Plymouth University should be value for money. If elected I will focus on ensuring that this is carefully implemented and hold the university to account to support the sporting community.
Defend Sports Wednesdays and combat the rising university gym price
As Plymouth University is not regarded as a Sporting University sport’s Wednesdays regularly come under attack, I would continue like previous VP Sports to ensure that Wednesdays are reserved for Sport. I will also endeavour to combat the ever rising university gym membership fee and focus on creating a sustainable deal for all students.
Revitalise VP Sports
I intend to become an engaging and an engaging sabbatical officer, re-establishing the connection between students and the students union. I plan on doing this by developing working relationships sports committees and regularly going out and talking to non-involved students. I feel that this is my most important aspect of my campaign.
