► Ben Lockie

My name is Benjamin Lockie I am a 3rd year student studying computing at the University of Plymouth.

I am 22 years old and I am originally from France. My mum is French however my dad is English . Since childhood I have travelled extensively and have experienced many cultures.
I am an outgoing person, always up for a bit of fun. I like going out and socializing with my friends, I also enjoy playing sports such as football, rock climbing, free running and kick boxing.

I am very concerned about the welfare of the planet and I think that global climate change is the most pressing issue of our time. I consider that it is the role of all of us to contribute to a greener world and treat this earth with respect while we are living on it and using its resources.
As President I will try and cut down energy used by the University campus and introduce energy from renewable sources such as solar panels or wind turbines.

From being raised in a diverse world moving from house to house, country to country I believe the University should provide more funding for overseas students to increase the cultural diversity of Plymouth. Diversity is present in the form of a salad bowl not a melting pot. The population of the University could be more diverse if more effort were put in on the social side of student life.
There should be more cultural events for example every Wednesday its international day so the University could organize different country related themes each week such as: Spanish day. The SU food bar could provide dishes relating to the country of that week and play music from that country at night.

In addition I am a massive fan of music; music wakes me up in the morning and follows me until the late hours of the night. There is a wide range of genres of music from drum and bass to folk music and I believe there should be more variety in the music being played in the SU bar. The music in the UK top 40 chart is popular but many people also enjoy alternative music and this music should be represented.
Why not dedicate another night in the week as music fan night, changing the genre every week to please everyone?

There should be some social event open to anyone and everyone to allow different groups of students to socialize.
We could establish links with another University. Every month we could host a national event that would bring students from all over the UK to Plymouth. In turn they would offer nights for our students to visit their city.

These are just a few ideas that I think could dramatically improve student life at the University of Plymouth. If you elect me as Student President then I will listen to your views and your ideas and actively strive to make this University a better place to study.
