► Joni Casey

I want to tell you about me, my experiences, my achievements, and why I want the opportunity to represent you as VP Sports Officer.
I am a 23 year old Architecture Student, and the current Chairman of the University Men’s Basketball Club. I am a keen sportsman who loves basketball, football, rugby, cricket, skiing, surfing, you name it I will give it a go. Over the years sports and activities have been a major part of my life, playing a lot of football in my younger years, then playing Basketball at college and borough level, which I progressed in more when coming to University.

Since coming to University I have got heavily involved with Men’s Basketball, being on the committee for 4 years, taking roles as social secretary, kit manager and then Chairman. For each role I strived to achieve the most I could for myself and for the club, as social secretary I aimed to get the best from sponsors and make every night a memorable one. As the kit manager I set up an online kit store for the club where people could go and buy at any time. As Chairman I have gone to develop the club to get it to run in a more professional manor, creating links with the Plymouth Raiders and other local businesses.
I am very much a people person and am not afraid of speaking my mind and being the voice for the students. I only want the best for sport at University and to see it progress to the next level.

My aims and Pledges

·         Increase the Development of sport in the University, at University and at club level.

o   Push clubs to reach the potential that they can achieve

o   Meet with clubs and produce long term goals and objectives.

o   Increase Club-Club Interaction

·         Produce and increase relationships between University Clubs and Plymouth Sports clubs and businesses.

·         Raise the profile of Intramural sports.

·         Try to produce more funding for sports, not only for clubs but for scholarships too, as well as trying to get better facilities for field sports.

·         Try to Free up Wednesday afternoons if not Wednesdays altogether

I will work with the Dean of Health and the University in drawing up a Sports Strategy to where sports are heading in the future. Is there any possibility to set up sports scholarships? What can be done to improve the Staddiscoombe site?

Also I will work with all clubs to look at how they are run, with sponsors, charity events, Coaching and training, using these strengths to create long term goals and objectives.

I’ll try and get Wednesday afternoons free for sport, working with the University to see if it is a realistic possibility to achieve this.

I pledge that you can come to me with any problem, question, query or idea to what is being done or what could be done.

You’re the students and it’s YOUR University I want to hear your voice
