Hi my name is Lydon Ward-Best and I am running for the position of Vice President of Sports in UPSU. I have been involved in University Sports for five years now and during this time I have had some of the best experiences of my life. It is because of this that I have decided to run for this position; I want more people to have those sorts of experiences. I feel that every student should have the chance to play the sport of their choice and that it should be encouraged.
My passion and enthusiasm for sport is relentless, during my time at the University of Plymouth I have played American Football for five years and been on their committee for four years as Advertising and Promotions, Equipment Manager and President for two years. During this time I have affected massive changes within the club, making joining cheaper, gaining a higher amount of members and a complete overhaul of the clubs image and branding. Though this effort the team’s results have also began to improve through better organisation. In 2009 I was awarded the Contribution to Sport Award by UPSU for my efforts and I plan to continue and exceed these levels of progress. I am known in my club for getting the job done and taking decisive action, I hope I can bring these qualities to the role.
This year I was elected to be the Chairman of the Sports Committee, through this Sports clubs can voice their concerns and have a unified opinion supporting the VP sports on issues. Through this role I have learnt more about the role of VP Sports and having attended Student Parliament have experience voicing sports club’s concerns to a wider audience such as the defence of Wednesday afternoons being free of lectures.
I also feel that as a Students Union the Sports teams do not work together enough, there is only one time of year when they do and that is varsity games. If elected to the position I would like to continue the groundwork set by previous holders of the position to provide a united and definitive brand of UPSU sports, be it by a mascot or logo whatever the general consensus may be. It is publically known that there are disagreements between certain clubs within UPSU, hopefully through hard work students who play sport will not just have pride in their own club but in the entire UPSU sports identity.
