Hi, my name’s Maxine Aylett and this year I’ve decided to run for VP of Activities and Communications. First a little bit about myself, I’m currently in my 3rd and final year of my English BA (Hons) degree and instantly knew that Plymouth was the university for me the moment I walked on campus! I’ll also tell you a secret (Sshhhh don’t tell anyone!), I’ve wanted to run for VP of Activities and Communications ever since I had those first ‘Welcome to Plymouth’ lectures in Fresher’s week, but decided to wait until I’d graduated to give it a go. So if you like the sound of what I plan to do if I get elected as a Sabbatical Officer, then also remember your giving me a shot at my dream job! Cheers!
I currently work as an Information Assistant at the Information Gateway in RLB, a job which enables me to get involved with and organise university events, especially International Students and Fresher’s week. I’m also a contributor, guest speaker and Managing editor of INK magazine, which means I’m comfortable with public speaking and juggling lots of different ongoing projects. I’m active within the university community and want to make it the best possible experience for every student that attends it. Personally, my 3 years at Plymouth have hands down been the best so far, and if elected as VP Activities and Communications, my main priority will be to ensure that students come away from the University of Plymouth with amazing experiences and skills, outside of their degree. I want students to realise that they can achieve much more than a degree from university, they can graduate with life-long friends, weird and wonderful experiences, skills that can be transferred into any career and an enviable CV! So briefly, here’s what I plan to do….
• Provide more training and support for Student Course Representatives and work on more open communication between students and their Sabbatical Officers.
• Make Plymouth’s Students Union accessible on every level – streamline UPSU website and create an online weekly and monthly ‘diary’. Push UPSU radio to the forefront of the Unions media and create a fun, open and interactive community surrounding it. Create an online newsletter or ‘ezine’ specifically dedicated to linking together all media and communications.
• Promote and emphasise everything the Students Union can offer, other than an amazing Friday or Saturday night out, and fight the student stereotype! Promote ViP more to students and the importance of running campaigns that mean something to the student body, encouraging students to squeeze the most out of their university experience!
So thanks for taking the time to read about me, I really hope you decide to vote me as your next Sabb, but the important thing is just to vote! Remember that it’s your university, your union, so have your say and make sure it’s run the way YOU want it to be!
Have your Say, Have your Vote…VOTE MAXINE #1 FOR VP ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNICATIONS!!!
