My name is Emma and I’m a third year Environmental Scientist. You’ve probably seen me around campus campaigning or petitioning at some point!
This role really appeals to me as I am very passionate about working with students. Although I really do think that we are lucky to have such a vibrant university, I also know that having someone who is friendly approachable to voice your opinions and offer support when things might not be going so well is just as important, just as it is crucial to feel welcome and able to ask for help.
I am committed to ensuring that each student has a rich and enjoyable university experience and that student welfare should be put before any marketability and profitability agenda of the university. The government are proposing to lift the cap off of tuition fees, while even now students are already feeling the pinch, having to find part time jobs and balance work and university life. I feel that it is important to have a union that can face these issues head on. I am confident that I have the energy and determination to help do this.
I would also like to put my experience of campaigning to fantastic use and help organise campaigns that you the students(course reps, groups or individuals) want. I get a real buzz from chatting to people about ideas they have and I have a lot of drive to get things achieved. I believe that my involvement at university, as course rep, being chairperson of the Climate Change Society and leading a team of mentors in a local secondary school has already given me lots of skills that I could utilise to both support and represent you as students. Last year I helped to organise activities in One World Week and Green Week, ran a campaign demanding green jobs for students, raised funds and took 55 students to London to protest and represented the University in Copenhagen during the UN COP-15 Summit.
What would I like to achieve?
• Firstly make sure that YOU the STUDENTS are put before profits and marketability of the university. STUDENTS BEFORE PROFITS!
• Campaign to keep the cap on tuition fees–‘EDUCATION not EXTORTION!’ No to an elitist education system where students will be faced with even more debt!
• ‘ASK EMMA’ Hold regular surgery sessions, at each site– getting out there approaching students for thier views and worries, not just waiting for them to come to me in the office.
• ‘DONT PUT IT OFF – PUT IT ON!’ Campaign to help break the silence surrounding sexual health. I will campaign for extended GUM clinic sessions at the uni doctors and to get free self testing kits toilets on campus.
• Support campaigns addressing the social injustice resulting from WAR and CLIMATE CHANGE.
• Ensure ALL STUDENTS, including, parent, international, disabled and mature students, postgraduates and those studying at other sites feel wholly supported&included during their university experience.
• Campaign, fight against& challenge RACISM, HOMOPHOBIA &SEXISM.
