► Michelle Carter

Firstly, a brief introduction to me, I am Michelle Carter, currently a third year business student looking to benefit the education system at the university by standing for VP Education and Welfare. I believe I am the right candidate for the position as I have experienced many issues within the University of Plymouth first hand, from finance problems to exam stress. I feel this has made my desire to overcome such issues for other students stronger. No one wants to see the same problems standing in the way of others, everyone should be able to make the most of their time at university as much as possible.

My time in education has been spent volunteering in schools where working with other students has taught me to put others’ needs first and how to effectively communicate with other students. This position requires dedication and a passion to make a difference. I feel that I am someone who people can turn to and trust with problems and I know that I will try my best to resolve each of them as efficiently as I can.

If elected I would see an improvement in student resources, for instance the library lacks certain material that many students require and struggle to purchase. I would also like to see changes in the printing system as the tuition fees that students are paying should enable them to make use of University facilities without incurring additional charges. I would also put in place a book changeover system, where as much as possible used text books would be sold between students each year to help with many students’ money concerns, it is also a more economical solution as new books do not always need to be purchased.

Another area I feel strongly about is financial availability. I aim to help with student funding issues this is for all students including international, mature, single parents, students from low income families and those who have to travel to university daily. These groups with added expenditure are more likely to be taking on too much paid work in order to cover additional expenses that the majority of students do not have. I aim for equality where everyone has an equal chance of success.

I would also see an increase in education advice and awareness events particularly offering more support for students concerning academic deadlines, time management and exam stress. These are areas that I know from personal experience are difficult and many students don’t seek help which can often help a great deal.

In conclusion, I am fighting for better student resources and financial support, equality among everyone and the chance to give the help and advice that many students need but never receive. If these are the things that affect you, or your friends have encountered problems then vote number one for me and make a difference to other people.
