Hey there!
I’m Emily, a final year Marine Biology and Oceanography undergrad. I’m running for this part time role because over the past 3 years here at university I’ve maintained a strong presence in keeping the University of Plymouth as green and eco-minded as possible, while also focusing on the ‘sustainability’ aspect of things in terms of human rights and social justice.
Last year I was elected in as Deputy Officer for this role, and so attended every session to take minutes and contribute. I got the chance to attend a Union Council meeting and help put through motions for the SU to support our campaigns to keep the University sustainable. I would love to continue the work we started, and listen to your ideas on what else we could do.
Over the last 2 years I’ve campaigned for the University to keep its money out of fossil fuel companies, and undertaken training to facilitate meetings and organise events and workshops to help make this happen as a Regional Organiser for People and Planet.
Currently I’m still a part of this campaign, as well as working on a new campaign around the issue of sweatshops (a highly unsustainable and unfair use of work).
This year I’d like to focus further on recycling at university, stemming from the ‘Eat, Sleep, Recycle, Repeat’ campaign led by the Environmental Society last year, such as looking at food waste from the Cafés on campus and checking that they correctly recycle all they can. I’d like to make sure the university buys its electronics supplies from sustainable and ethical sources, and ask that they commit to never invest in fossil fuels. I’d also like to start anything new that we discuss at the first Forum meeting, and look forward to hearing your suggestions!
