What is your name?

Natalie Shotton

What course are you studying?

BSc (Hons) Psychology

What stage of your course are you currently studying?

3rd Year, Placement

What motivated you to run for a full-time representative role?

I’m motivated to run for Faculty of Health President because of my passion for social change. My psychology course deepened my interest in social psychology, particularly group dynamics and inclusion. Through my research, I’ve learned that feeling included and valued is essential for academic success. Despite their best intention and efforts, I believe the university could do more to foster this sense of belonging for all students.

Why do you think you would be a good President?

I believe I would be a strong President due to my commitment to supporting all students. My research has deepened my understanding of the challenges underrepresented students face academically and socially. Having had a diverse university experience, I’ve met many students who share similar struggles. This has strengthened my empathy and drive to create a more inclusive environment. I’m passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices and ensuring a supportive student experience in the FoH.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Empathetic, Hard-working, Conscientious

If you could change one thing in your Faculty what would that be?

I would improve support for all students by prioritising mental health services to ensure they receive the help they need during uncertain times. Isolation is a common issue at university, impacting both studies and wellbeing. It’s a challenge most students face, regardless of age or background. Additionally, I would increase support for financial strain, particularly during placements in the FoH, as these seldom require full-time unpaid work, which can be difficult to manage.

Why did you chose to study at the University of Plymouth?

I chose to study here because of its strong focus on student support and community. The uni creates a brilliant environment for both academic and personal growth, with lots of chances to connect with people from all walks of life. When we achieve something, we celebrate together. The emphasis on wellbeing really speaks to me, and I’d love to help improve that experience for everyone. Plus, the stunning beaches and buzzing campus life make Plymouth an amazing place to be!

What is your favourite thing about Plymouth?

My favourite thing about Plymouth is the growing mix of cultures. I’ve had the chance to meet amazing people from all around the world without even leaving the UK. I’ve celebrated all kinds of holidays from different cultures, I’ve tried new foods, learned about different traditions, and gained fresh perspectives. It’s given me a new understanding of the world, and I’m truly grateful for the experiences and friendships I’ve made here.
