What is your name?
Alex Griffin
What course are you studying?
BSc (Hons) Geography and Ocean Science
What stage of your course are you currently studying?
4
What motivated you to run for a full-time representative role?
I'm running for this role in order to give as many students as I possibly can the chance to be heard and the chance to have the best university experience possible. During my time as a student I have picked up on many things that I would really like to give a go at changing or improving in order to make students' lives easier.
Why do you think you would be a good President?
I have experience in running societies (Trans + Nonbinary society chair, 2022/3 and 2023/4, Wildlife and Ecology society secretary 2023/4) and representing students (Trans rep 2022/3). I'm very open minded and like gathering a range of opinions and experiences in order to aid my own decision making and views. I'm very keen to help other students in any way I can and I am determined to make a difference to the student body both in my faculty and across the university :)
What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Determined, detail-oriented, resourceful.
If you could change one thing in your Faculty what would that be?
One thing I would like to change is accessibility and inclusion, particularly in lab work and fieldwork. I would like to lobby for improved reasonable and sufficient alternatives to lab sessions and field trips so students do not feel forced to attend or feel like they are missing out if they can't join, whether that is due to a temporary illness or a long term health condition.
Why did you chose to study at the University of Plymouth?
Like many other students, I came for the sea. The environment of Devon and Cornwall provides a perfect area for studying both Geography and Ocean Science, so a degree in both at Plymouth was perfect!
What is your favourite thing about Plymouth?
The beaches! And I mean the ones actually in Plymouth! There's a really cool foreshore on the Barbican that provides a literal rainbow of seaglass (from red all the way to purple!) if you're lucky enough, and the Hoe's beach provides a really nice set of rockpools on a good spring tide which I'd argue is just as good as Mount Batten or Wembury 🦀
