What is your name?

Alex Shackleton

What course are you studying?

MSc Criminology

What stage of your course are you currently studying?

Year 1

What motivated you to run for a full-time representative role?

Originally I had not considered myself for this role as I didn't believe I could action change as one person. However, after being recommended for the role by one of my professors, I reconsidered my ability. Throughout my undergraduate and now my master's degrees, I have seen various changes across the University which has inspired me to pursue an active role in shaping our student community here at Plymouth.

Why do you think you would be a good President?

I believe I would be a good president as I have spent the last 3 and a half years here at Plymouth and therefore know the school well. I have experience interacting with people from all walks of life through my time volunteering with the Witness Service which will be highly useful to effectively liaise with both students and staff to ensure positive changes are made. To guarantee voices are heard and changes are made, I will take a proactive approach and create an open space for all.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Friendly, honest and determined

If you could change one thing in your Faculty what would that be?

If I could change one thing in the Faculty, I would work to increase the accessibility of and enhance the resources available to students throughout their course regarding work experience opportunities and industry connections. Through doing so, I would hope to help provide more opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and ease the transition from University into post-grad life.

Why did you chose to study at the University of Plymouth

Plymouth was my first choice for numerous reasons. This includes Plymouth University being a campus-based university which fosters a sense of community and the various societies available at Plymouth. The facilities and the ethos of the university on the whole resonated with me. From the novel "criminology labs" to 24-hour library access.

What is your favourite thing about Plymouth?

The accessibility of the city is my favourite thing about Plymouth, being within walking distance of the sea is a perfect way to unwind. The numerous beaches and Dartmoor are also ideal when taking a break from studying. Overall, Plymouth is the perfect location for getting the busy city atmosphere but also the relaxing scenic environment.
