Richard Preziosi from the School of Biological and Marine Sciences will discuss volunteer expedition medic opportunities for student paramedics due to graduate soon. This event will be held on Zoom.

The School of Biological and Marine Sciences runs several field courses every year to allow students to develop practical skills and experience biology and research in situ. Many of these field courses are to overseas and remote locations where medical help may be limited or difficult to access. To address this issue we take expedition medics or paramedics with us on our field courses when appropriate.

The role of the medic or paramedic will be to provide advanced first aid and medical care in the event of accidents or emergencies, and to provide medical opinion to the field course leader on issues of staff and student health and wellbeing, especially regarding risk assessment review in the field. We encourage (but do not require) accompanying medics or paramedics to provide some first aid training to students when appropriate. All medical equipment and medications will be paid for by the university and obtained in consultation with the accompanying medic.

Medics or paramedics accompanying our field courses would have all their travel and subsistence costs covered. Medics and paramedics would need to purchase their own overseas liability insurance, but that cost would be reimbursed by the university. No fee is paid to accompanying medics or paramedics.

Example locations of field courses expected to run in the next year are; Costa Rican rainforest, Azores, and The Bahamas. If you are interested in being notified as opportunities arise, please contact Richard.preziosi@plymouth.ac.uk.

This event is held over Zoom, so please attend to find out more about these amazing opportunities!

Students should note that this opportunity is aimed at 3rd years who are due to qualify soon, and as a result any volunteering opportunity is arranged directly between them and the School of Biological and Marine Sciences.

1st and 2nd year students are more than welcome to attend and ask questions as there is potential room for further opportunities similar to this in the future when you qualify.

See you there! ParaSoc :)
