Come join us this Saturday, October 15, at 1pm, to stand in solidarity with women in Iran. Help give the voice to those who are being silenced and shed the light on the horrible events going on in Iran.
What: Demonstration in solidarity with women in Iran
When: Saturday, October 15, 1pm-3pm.
Where: Jigsaw Park near Drake Circus
Why: On September 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was brutally killed by the morality police that was established to punish and arrest women and young girls for wearing their hijabs and other clothing "improperly". Mahsa was brutally beaten up in the police van, resulting in a coma and her eventual death.
Since then, many Iranian young women decided to take off their hijabs and come out to protest the Iranian regime that violates freedom and basic human rights, which led to many of them being arrested and the Internet being cut off in Iran, so they no longer have the means to spread the word about what is going on there.
This sparked a lot of protests across the world, including the UK. We believe that we are required to speak up and take action against this blatant women's rights violation, and we believe that it is our duty to amplify the voices of those who are being silenced.
The aims of the demonstration are:
- to spread information about the current events in Iran
- to gain media and public attention
- to amplify the voices of silenced women
- we DO NOT seek to demand sanctions to be placed on Iran's government or peoples. This will only hurt those affected and those who are innocent.
- we DO NOT wish to protest violently. This is a peaceful demonstration.
The event is open to all students wishing to support the cause. If you wish to attend, please fill out this anonymous form: https://forms.gle/7oK1SLGH7VsrrJgT7.
