Racial Harassment
Racial harassment is a form of hate crime and can include:
- Abusive words or jokes
- Name calling or patronising remarks
- Display or circulation of offensive textual or visual content, including graffiti
- Physical assaults, abuse, disrespectful behaviour or gestures
- Exclusion from a group's usual social intercourse
- Unwanted or invasive questioning or pestering
A hate incident is any incident that the person affected or anyone else believes is based on a person’s identity. Not all hate incidents will lead to criminal offences, however regardless of this they should be taken very seriously.
According to Stop Hate UK, racism is the highest reported motivation for Hate Crimes, 43% of Hate Crimes reported to their helpline were related to race.
All forms of racial harassment are unacceptable. If you are in need of help to define your experience, this resource from Mind may help you identify how you are feeling following an incident.
