I am conducting a study to explore the effects of autism spectrum disorder on female students at University of Plymouth (UOP). My research explores topics such as masking (hiding your autism), education, and employment. There is no need to be ‘officially’ diagnosed to take part in this study, you may also self-identify as autistic. This will provide you with an outlet to voice your previous life experiences of being an autistic woman in a world designed for the neurotypical population. When the study is finished, it could provide valuable insight for individuals and institutions who may be unaware of the effects which autism can have on women, especially university students. It will aim to highlight the improvements which can be made to the services on offer at the University of Plymouth, including careers support.
What will you have to do if you agree to take part?
Participants of this study will complete a survey containing questions which require relatively short answers. The survey should take about 5 minutes. Questions will be asking about your experiences of being an autistic woman and how this impacts your everyday life. You will also have the opportunity (if you want) to take part in a further semi-structured interview (which will be audio recorded providing you give consent) where you would be able to expand on your answers in more depth. Your stories and insights will be a big help in understanding the unique experiences of autistic women at UOP.
There is a participant information sheet attached at the front of the survey.
