School of Art, Design and Architecture School Rep Update

End of Semester Report

Working as a School Representative this semester has been a fascinating and rewarding experience. Although I joined mid-November, I was able to participate in several meetings and events and contribute to representing students' voices at the school level.

Administrative Meetings

I began my role by meeting with the Associate Head of School - Victoria Squire, and the SU Student Voice Co-ordinator - Hannah Lord. Together, we discussed various methods of collecting feedback and improving communication about the student experience. These regular catch-ups became a vital aspect of this work, forming the backbone of effective information sharing.

FTLQC

At the Faculty Teaching and Learning Quality Committee (FTLQC) meeting  I met key administrators and learned about updates to the education structure. Alongside Faculty Rep - Josh Frost, and fellow School Rep - Tariq Ali, we engaged in a discussion about the implications of AI in education today and in the future. It was an enlightening experience, delving into such a rapidly evolving topic.

STLQC

School Teaching and Learning Quality Committee (STLQC) meeting became a critical opportunity to meet Programme Leaders from various courses within the School of Art, Design, and Architecture. Since the school had not had a School Representative for some time, my primary goal was to rebuild communication channels between students and staff. Together, we discussed strategies for moving forward and scheduled introductions to strengthen these connections.

Course-reps Drop-in

During drop-in sessions with Course Representatives, a concern about the Wood Workshop was raised. To understand the scope, I held additional meetings and conducted a survey to gather student feedback. The issue, impacting many students’ education and future prospects, was escalated with Victoria Squire and Josh Frost to the Vice-Chancellor and later the Dean of School. While still ongoing, our swift action ensured the University's attention, and efforts are underway to address it. I continue to monitor the situation and update students on developments.

Next Semester

Overall, the past couple of months have been highly productive. Looking ahead, there is still much to accomplish. My primary goals for the next semester are:

  • Continue improving communication channels.
  • Host additional Course Rep meetings.
  • Follow up on the Wood Workshop issue to ensure progress is made.
  • Maintain availability for drop-in sessions to address student concerns.

Thank you to everyone who has supported and contacted me. I remain committed to being an effective communicator and ensuring that student feedback is delivered and acted upon!
