On the 23rd of November 2023, committee members from the Debate Society hosted a Thanksgiving dinner at Sherwell Church to raise money for charity and invited members of the Rounders Club for the chance to get to know one another, socialise and discuss important topics.

Debate Society member, Saffron, shared with us an overview of the event…

It was opportunity for two societies, who haven’t mixed before, to get together and break down sports clubs/society barriers and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

"We wanted to host an event that could raise some money for Chairty, whilst also giving our members a good time. Debate’s Sustainability Officer is American and so we thought we could celebrate a holiday special to her whilst raising money (each ticket was £2 with half of each ticket going to charity)

I had a great time the food was lovely food and so was atmosphere! – Jude Miller, Debate member.

We wanted to do something different to our usual session to celebrate Thanksgiving, so everyone bought a dish, and we laid it all out and members could help themselves, and then sat down together to share our food and what we were thankful for. It was a really nice chance to reflect on the good things we have in life, the community we have all found in Debate and how we’re fortunate to compared to others.

It was particularly nice to see the amount of effort people had gone to with their food, in the cost-of-living crisis to see everyone bring so much to make sure everyone could be fed for little cost. We also made hand-turkeys for some light-hearted fun; it was great to see everyone getting so involved! Overall, we made £25 for our Charites, Orchid and First Light Southwest.

Since moving away for University, it’s always nice to have a piece of home with you, and being able to share that with debate meant a great deal to me, it was so much fun sharing this with everyone! – Morissa Johnson, Debate Sustainability Officer.

“I really liked it the food was great; the venue was good and making hand turkeys was really fun”. Jamie Mellegard – Debate member
