Progress Report: Adam Holt – School Rep for SoGEES (2024/2025)

Hey! Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been up to as the School Rep for SoGEES, and what I’ve got planned for the rest of the academic year.

Wins:

  • Subject Reps are now a thing: I’ve set up the Subject Representative roles within SoGEES, with the help of program leads. Now we have reps for Geography, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science & Management, and Chemistry. Plus, we've got an international students’ rep, all of which having been doing a fantastic job!
  • SU Campaigns: I’ve been working really hard on campaigns like the Drug & Alcohol awareness week and the upcoming SU campaign around consent.
  • Fighting for fair term times: I’ve been pushing the university to stay aware of the changes to term times and how that’s putting pressure on students. I’ve also been in discussions to make sure that Discovery Weeks are focused on things that actually benefit students, instead of just being another "week off."
  • Getting everyone involved: I’ve been working hard to keep in touch with all the course reps in SoGEES. Whether it’s attending SSLC meetings or making sure reps are getting regular feedback, I’ve been trying to stay on top of it.

Things I Haven’t Quite Pulled Off:

  • SoGEES Rep Photo Board: This one’s a biggy! I had plans to create a “Who’s Who” photo board of all the reps, but it turned out to be way more work than I could manage. In the future, I think it’d work better if we just focus on recognition at the program or course level, especially with the new subject reps.
  • Regular Rep Meetings: I wanted to have regular catchups with all the course reps, but it’s tough to find a time that works for everyone. I’ll try to do more general meetings going forward.

What’s Coming Up:

  • More Subject Rep Meetings: I’m planning to hold a meeting with all the subject reps by the end of January and then try to make it a monthly thing. This will help us stay on track and make sure we're all working together.
  • Deputy School Rep: I’m going to appoint a Deputy School Rep for next year (2025/2026) to help make the transition smoother when I step down.
  • Supporting Wellbeing Initiatives: I’ll be helping with any initiatives the VP Wellbeing & Diversity thinks are a priority for SoGEES, for example the SU’s consent campaign so we can keep improving the student experience.

That’s it for now! I’ll keep working hard to improve things for everyone in SoGEES, and I’ll keep you updated on how it’s going!
