On the 23rd and 24th of November 2024, a group of seven dedicated members from the University of Plymouth Jiu Jitsu Club travelled to Sheffield to train under some of the best Senseis and compete with Jitsuka from across the country. The BUCS Atemi Nationals brought together over 800 participants from universities nationwide, making it a vibrant and competitive event.
Erin Woolnough competed in the yellow belt category, showcasing impressive new techniques and throws learned over the weekend. Her performance was a testament to her hard work and adaptability.
Rebecca Wein focused on training and shared her excitement, saying, “I loved meeting fellow Jitsuka. They are all so friendly and welcoming, a truly amazing community.”
Both Ben Bowles and Oscar Mansell progressed to the second rounds of the white belt competition, demonstrating the strong foundation and skills they’ve developed over the past months.
Oliver Elliott made the most of his training sessions, refining his techniques with a focus on effective striking. He discovered a new favourite move—a powerful kick followed by a sweep to the leg demonstrating the importance of balance taking over strength, which he practiced with precision.
Elisa Da Silva Da Costa shone in the women’s BUCS competition, competing against equal and higher-grade opponents. She advanced to the finals and received great feedback from the judges, who praised her “great techniques and excellent control throughout.”
Michael Heazelton represented the club in the men’s BUCS competition, also making it to the finals. Competing against higher-graded opponents, Michael impressed with his diverse array of techniques from experience gained over the years.
The weekend was a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved, not only to compete and learn but also to forge new friendships within a warm and welcoming Jiu Jitsu community.
