Here at the SU, we understand the struggles many of our students are facing due to the rising cost of living. We know it’s not just about balancing books and lectures anymore, it’s about finding ways to work, pay bills, keep meals on the table, and still enjoy your time as a student.
We want you to know this: you are not alone.
We’re here to support you with practical initiatives designed to ease your financial burden and ensure you can focus on what really matters, your education, well-being, and personal growth. Here’s a breakdown of the key support systems we have in place:
Community Larder
Sometimes, a little help can go a long way. Our Community Larder is here for those moments when you need it most. Funded by the SU, this initiative provides staple food items to students in need.
How does it work?
-
Visit the Student Hub or the SU Advice Centre to discuss your situation.
-
A referral form will be submitted on your behalf, and we’ll arrange a convenient time for you to collect a bag of essentials.
What’s in the bag?
- Items like rice, pasta, oats, milk, and tinned goods—everything to help you keep going.
You don’t have to struggle in silence. Reach out, and we’ll be there to help.

Please note, from Friday 20th December - Monday 6th January (over the winter break) collections will be available from the Student Hub instead of the SU. To view the Student Hub's opening times over the winter break, please visit this link
Affordable Veg Boxes
Healthy eating shouldn’t have to break the bank. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Fareshare, a not-for-profit organization that redistributes surplus food, to offer affordable mixed veg boxes for just £3.
Every Tuesday, you can get your hands on a box filled with fresh fruits, veggies, and other goodies.
How to get involved:
- Sign up on the SU website to receive notifications when the boxes go on sale each week.
- Pre-order to secure your box, as this scheme is very popular!
Eating well is so important, especially during stressful times. Let us help you make it easier.

Please note, the last veg box before the winter break will be distributed on Tuesday 17th December. Veg boxes will return on Tuesday 14th January 2025.
Free Period Products
Periods should never be a financial burden. That’s why we’re providing free period products at the SU Hive and the Student Hub. No questions, no judgment, just support when you need it.
More Support Coming Soon
We know the challenges you’re facing are complex and ongoing, which is why we’re not stopping here. The SU is constantly working on new initiatives to support you even further in the coming year. We’re listening to your feedback and exploring ways to expand our support systems.
We want to remind you that the challenges you’re facing don’t define your university experience. It’s okay to ask for help. We’re here to stand by you, offering practical solutions and a supportive community that truly cares.
If you’re struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Whether it’s through the initiatives above, advice from the SU team, or just someone to talk to, we’ve got your back.
Together, we can get through this.
Dindu Okechukwu,
Students' Union President.
