To all of our members,
The acts of hate, violence and vandalism we saw on Monday night in Plymouth are not reflective of the welcoming, supportive and diverse community in our city that we are proud to be a part of.
We were shocked and appalled to see the demonstrations held in our city centre escalate into violence and public disorder. While the right to protest and freedom of speech are integral parts of our democracy, there is no excuse for those intent on creating a culture of fear on our streets or in our community.
Whether you were born in Plymouth or you’ve chosen this city as your home - no one has the right to make you feel unsafe or unwelcome while walking down our shared streets.
From conversations with our members, we know that many of you are feeling anxious and many will be living in fear. This is unacceptable and has no justification, we want you to know that we stand with you and that support is available to you during this unpredictable and unsettling time.
If you feel you need it, please reach out to:
“Plymouth is a brilliant place to live, work and play. Our diversity makes us stronger, not weaker.” – Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport
We commend and thank the teams from Devon & Cornwall Police and Plymouth City Council for their tireless work in keeping our Plymouth community safe and for working through the night to bring all residents a feeling of normality and security on Tuesday morning.
If you were in the city centre on the night of Monday 5th August and you have any footage or images of the disorder which may help investigating officers please get in touch with Devon and Cornwall Police either by calling 101 or via their website and quote log 378 of 5 August.
