8 incredible societies undertook a range of lifesaving challenges during Hero Week to see who could raise the most money for Anthony Nolan.

Anthony Nolan saves the lives of those with blood cancer by finding incredible stem cell matches, research and be a support for patients. Every day Anthony Nolan gives three people a second chance at life.

Tropical Island Society took on several challenges depending on the amount raised, this included being pied in the face, eggs to the head and even a winter hoe dip. They managed to raise an amazing £469, enough to sign up 11 people to the stem cell register.

“We absolutely enjoyed participating in this fundraising event. All of us islanders and islanders at heart have bonded during this time through our challenges and contributing to a cause close to all our hearts"

- Tropical Island Society

UP Ladies Football Club hosted an incredible quiz, raising £373 while Plymouth Photography Society took on an incredible general knowledge bingo raising £30.

"UPLFC did a fantastic job to raise £373 for the amazing PlymMarrow. Our social secs organised and ran an online quiz with 24 teams made up of our girls, friends, housemates and family members! We got an enormous amount of support with a total of 96 people participating in the quiz and 48 donations for the cause. We even managed to give away a cash prize to our top 3 teams!
UPLFC are so happy with the amount we raised, especially considering we significantly exceeded our target of £50. Thank you to all the girls at UPLFC for doing such a fantastic job, and well done to those at PlymMarrow for such fantastic work!"

- University of Plymouth Ladies Football Club

Swimming and Water Polo undertook a 96-second challenge for the entire week, to represent the number of people diagnosed with blood cancer every day, raising a brilliant £50.

“We’ve loved participating in a movement for such a great cause which we all back and believe in. It was a fun and community bonding way to raise money for such an important cause which is close to our hearts”

Finally, Athletics, UP Bolts, Medsoc and UP Netball Club all took to Strava to cover an incredible mileage, raising £55, £202, £19, and £215, respectively.

“working with PlymMarrow introduced some good friendly competition in the team, brought us all closer together during these restrictive times and helped us support an amazing charity”

- University of Plymouth Bolts

"It was great for our members to have some extra motivation to run through lockdown."

- Athletics Club

"Hero week was great for UPNC! With the current COVID-19 situation, we haven’t been able to see each other or even play netball this year. Hero week allowed us to motivate each other again, bringing a bit of normality in these very abnormal times. The effort from the girls was impressive and we raised over £200 for a great charity!"

We also saw some incredible Strava art from Plymouth Bolts!

It was a tight race throughout the week of who was topping the leader board with UP Netball and UP Ladies Football Club competing for the top spot. However, on Friday night Tropical Island Soc got a few big donations which saw them steal the lead at the very last moment to come out at the top of the leader board! We managed to raise an incredible £1,413 enough to sign up 35 more people to the stem cell register.

Overall, the week was a great success and we loved working with all the different societies to help raise money for Anthony Nolan and we would love to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part or donated!
