On the 28th September 2019, at the Marrow National Conference 2019, Plymouth Marrow were awarded UK Top Fundraisers of the Year in recognition for their hard work over the past year.
The society raised over £10,000, an incredible £7000 increase on the previous year.
Plymouth Marrow President 2018 - 19, Jordan Hargreaves said:
"We are incredibly proud of the committee and all the volunteers who worked so hard to raise that money and smash our target and can’t thank all the societies and sports clubs who helped us out this year. Without all of those involved none of it would have been possible."
Plymouth Marrow’s 2018/19 committee organised, hosted and collaborated with other societies and clubs on a wide range of fundraising events throughout the year. They've worked tirelessly throughout the year holding bake sales, working with Big Band Society to host a 'High Society' evening, organising a Silent Disco with Sailing & Powerboating and Snowriders, plus raising £4500 in just one night with their Valentine's Auction/'Take Me Out'.
So, why do they do what they do?
"Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukaemia. Caught your attention yet? For many, a blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant is their only chance of life and offers a cure. Anthony Nolan is a charity that supports the 1,600 people in the UK and 37,000 worldwide that are currently waiting for that potentially lifesaving match. Marrow is a group lead by university students that aims to enhance Anthony Nolan’s work."
As well as raising over £10,000, Plymouth Marrow have also swabbed over 1000 potential lifesavers to the stem cell register this year alone. Their next donor recruitment drive will be on Wednesday 30th October, head down to the SU between 1 - 6pm to find out more and potentially become the lifesaving match that someone desperately needs.
