The University of Plymouth Law Society (UPLS) is a student run society which "aims to give students the best opportunities to develop transferable skills, making you an extremely valuable graduate after your time at Plymouth." On the 14th November, UPLS attended the 26th annual Pilgrim Fathers Lecture and met with guest speaker the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales - the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon following his lecture "What's in a name? The High Court and its Divisions".
Deborah Kumar-Benjamin, President of UPLS said:
"It was an amazing turnout! The students had a chance to talk to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales afterwards, and it was a really insightful event. He spoke about the importance of networking, and asking plenty of questions before committing to a career path, often as students we are afraid to ask. As he rightly said, every professional was a student at one time."
The Pilgrim Fathers lecture is a prestigious event that occurs every year and commemorates the Pilgrim Fathers voyage to America in 1620 and traditionally embodied themes of freedom and human rights. Each year a high profile guest speaker is invited making it a celebrated event in the legal profession calendar and has attracted current and past Lord Chancellors, Lord Justices of Appeal and Lords of Appeal. The event was organised by the University of Plymouth, Plymouth Law Society and Plymouth City Council.
"It was truly a pleasure to watch the genuine interest and excitement in our members who were able to talk so freely with someone who is so highly regarded in today's legal field. The advice he gave, and his approachable nature will be remembered by many of us as we continue on our academic journey."
The University of Plymouth Law Society is set up for students studying Law, Law Major, Law Minor, Criminology & Criminal Justice Studies, GDL and LPC courses, as well as anyone who is interested in a career in the legal field. It gives hands on experience of mooting, debating, negotiations, client interviewing as well as participating in mock trials. All of which is supported by the local legal community, of law firms, chambers and professionals who provide sponsorship, judge competitions and attend their Annual Cheese and Wine Networking Evening.
