Did you know 43% of LGBT+ people think public sporting events aren't a welcoming space for those within the LGBT+ community? That's 4 in 10 LGBT+ people who believe that sport is not welcoming.

Levi Baston, Chairman of the University of Plymouth Tennis Club (UPTC), said:

"Hearing this statistic alone has made me aware that not all sport communities are as socially inclusive as I may have thought. As a club we ensure that we allow every member to be who they want to be without without judgement. We welcome absolute everyone, no matter your ethnicity, background or sexual orientation."

This year to ensure their support for the LGBT+ community they will be supporting Stonewall's national 'Come Out Active in Sport' Campaign between the 23rd - 30th November. They'll also be showing their support by wearing and selling rainbow laces.

"This is a very easy, straight forward way of showing our support to those around us. We have purchased Rainbow laces from the Stonewall website and in order to raise money I'll be selling pairs of Rainbow Laces for £3 in order to fundraise and raise as much money for the Stonewall charity as possible. Rainbow Laces day is Wednesday 27th November so during social play at our very own team matches I hope everyone will join me in wearing our laces to show a bit of support."

Key Dates:

  • 23rd - 30th November: 'Come out Active in Sport' week
  • 24th November: Quiz at Revs in support of Stonewall
  • 27th November: Rainbow Laces Day

If you're interested in purchasing a pair of Rainbow Laces, you buy them from here.

Levi Baston, Chairman of the University of Plymouth Tennis Club (UPTC), said:

"The University of Plymouth Tennis Club is an openly, socially inclusive club that welcome members of all backgrounds, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation. We are supporting the 'Come out Active in Sport' campaign to highlight the importance of making all clubs inclusive to all members."

UPTC are open to players of all abilities, whether you're a first time player with no previous experience or a player with plenty of match experience, you will be welcomed by the club with open arms. There's nothing they love more than increasing their friendly and welcoming club with fresh new members. Be sure to join one of the most exciting, family like clubs on Campus!
