In March, the University of Plymouth's swim team spent a weekend Birmingham for the BUSL National B Final! This was the second time the team have qualified, however, it was the first time that the team has been able to attend.

Members of the swim team shared with us the positive result of the competition, as well as highlighting the success of key swimmers...

"The team came 2nd out of 20 universities, including Bristol, Newcastle, Liverpool and Kings Collage London. This was also the first time this year we have beat Bristol, and by 81 points in the end!"

Everyone that went swam extremely well, with the team getting 7 first place races, 3 second place and 5 thirds, all out of 20. The remaining races we were majority always in the top 10!

Some key individual swims and races include:

  • Eja Coe who has won every individual in all 5 busl galas.
  • The girls medley relay who, again, has been undefeated all year and went sub 2 minutes for the first time this year. The Boys medley relay also came 3rd in the medley relay.
  • Zoe cawsey, again, has won every individual race this year and won all three rounds of skins, a fast pace 3x50m on minimal rest and a knock out every round of swimmers, with random strokes that are pulled out of the hat. She has also set a BUSL record in the 100m, the very first event. Sadly, this was soon taken by a swimmer in the A final, however, her time puts her at 2nd out of the 40 universities that swam that day.
  • Will Le Merle, qualified for the quickest heat of the skins and made it to round 2.
  • One of the closet races of the evening was the mens 50m Brs. Joe Sin came third with an impressive sub 30 seconds time.
  • The last race of the day was the mixed 8x50m free relay, which saw 2 boys go sub 25 seconds and zoe cawsey go 25.00. The team did an amazing job coming a close second the University of Sheffield, who won the final.

"Hopefully the team will have a similar outcome next year, and we hope it will gain our University some BUCS points. But, overall the swim team has made some big improvements this year, clearly the 5am start didn't phase the swimmers!"

Here at UPSU we would like to say a big congratulations to all the swimmers for their amazing achievements and we can't wait to see what is next!
