"On Saturday 22nd March, Waterfront Running Club took on an ambitious challenge—our very own Ultra Relay Marathon—and our team of 27 runners absolutely smashed it! Covering a continuous 48.9km loop around Plymouth, we collectively ran over 130km, all in support of Devon Mind and the vital mental health services they provide.
The Challenge
The relay followed an 8km loop incorporating some of our favourite running routes. Runners took on individual distances ranging from 2km to 12km, with our dedicated committee members volunteering at four first aid and water stations positioned every 2km. Their support ensured that all participants stayed safe, hydrated, and motivated throughout the event.
Running for a Cause
Beyond the physical challenge, this relay was about something bigger—raising awareness and funds for mental health. Through ticket sales, we raised £143, with even more donated via our JustGiving page, all going towards Devon Mind to support those in our community who need it most.
At Waterfront Running, we believe that movement matters, and so does mental health. Running has the power to boost wellbeing, create community, and foster resilience—values that were on full display throughout this incredible challenge.
A Huge Thank You to Our Organisers & Supporters
This event would not have been possible without the incredible dedication of our committee. A huge thank you to our Chair, Mia Griffiths, and Treasurer, Mia Prosser, for leading the organisation of the entire event—from logistics to fundraising.
A special shoutout to our Health and Safety Officer, Xaviera Bampoe-Addo, for ensuring the event ran smoothly and safely, and to our Fundraising & Volunteering Officer, Rachel Thacker, for coordinating with Devon Mind to make this fundraiser a success. We’re also grateful to our Social Secretaries, Olivia Phillips and Lizzy Fulford, for putting together a fantastic post-run celebration, bringing everyone together to mark the achievement in style.
We’d also like to extend our thanks to the University of Plymouth Students’ Union for their guidance and support, particularly Holly Randall, as well as the incredible staff at Devon Mind for their ongoing commitment to mental health support in our community.
Celebrating Success
After crossing the finish line, the celebrations continued with a medal ceremony to honour everyone’s hard work. We then headed to a well-earned pub quiz, brilliantly hosted by Georgie Salmon and Samuel Bennett, bringing the club together to reflect on our achievements and share a fantastic evening.
This ultra relay was more than just a race—it was a testament to our team spirit, determination, and commitment to making a difference. A massive thank you to everyone who ran, volunteered, donated, and cheered us on."
Here’s to even bigger challenges ahead—because at Waterfront Running, we keep moving forward, together!
