On May 7th, 2023, the University of Plymouth Volleyball Club (UPVC) organised a charity volleyball event in support of Breast Cancer Now, a UK-based charity that funds research and provides support for people affected by breast cancer. The event aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds to support Breast Cancer Now's important work. The event was a huge success and raised an incredible £300! Laura Alvarez Hidalgo, UPVC Health and Safety Officer, provided us with an overview of the event...

The event took place from 10:00-18:00 and featured three teams from UPVC and Plymouth Mayflower Volleyball Club (PMVC) competing against each other Stoke at Damerel Community College. The teams were mostly developmental players, and the games were organised according to the league they played in to ensure similar skill levels.

The event was a fun and meaningful way for the community to come together and make a positive impact.

Each game had five sets to play, with the first team to win three sets declared the winner. The games lasted a minimum of two and a half hours and a maximum of three hours. The teams not only played their games but also supported the event by refereeing the other teams' games. The first game featured UPVC Cyclones against PMVC Cobras, a ladies league game. The game was an intense battle, with Cyclones initially trailing by two sets. However, Cyclones made an incredible comeback and won the game 3-2, showing remarkable improvement and team bonding. The game lasted for three hours, with the final score in favor of UPVC Cyclones. The second game was UPVC Heatwaves vs PMVC Tigers, a game in the third division. Our players fought hard throughout the game, but unfortunately, they were unable to bring home the victory. They were able to win one of the last sets, making the final score 4-1. The third game featured UPVC Blizzards vs PMVC Scorpions, a game in the second division. Our team showed incredible determination and beautiful hits, resulting in a victory by 4 sets to 1. The game was a sight to behold and not one to miss.

It is essential to note that the charity event was organised to support Breast Cancer Now. Each player donated £5 to participate, and with the players' contributions, UPVC collected £155. In addition, members of the organisation donated through a go fund me page, raising in total an incredible £300.

In conclusion, the charity volleyball event organized by UPVC was a huge success. The teams showed remarkable sportsmanship, skill, and determination throughout the games, providing a thrilling experience for everyone in attendance.

"What an incredible day! The charity volleyball event was a blast, and we couldn't be prouder of our players for showing up and showing out. We had some amazing games, some nail-biting moments, and some serious skills on display. Most importantly, we came together as a community to support Breast Cancer Now, and that's something we can all be proud of. Can't wait for the next one!" -- Laura Alvarez Hidalgo – Health and Safety Officer
